History: On Norse Warrior Women

Hello everyone, this is Casimir talking. I fully admit I tend to have my hackles raised by any popular article or meme going around that has to do anything with mythology or history. The reasoning behind this isn’t always because they’re incorrect (like the meme on Odin & Valhalla).

This time it is about an article about a supposedly Norse warrior woman found. I am not arguing that the grave is or is not that of a woman; what is being argued here are the illogical leaps that are being taken after this discovery. The argument being made that “half of all Vikings were women” (Note here, the Vikings weren’t a type, Viking was essentially an occupation).

Please, please, please do not assume I am some anti-feminist bigot — that is one of the furthest things from the truth, and definitely not what I’m going for here. What I am asking, no, begging is that before you share these clickbait articles do your research. Find an article from a reputable source, one that doesn’t use words like “irrefutable”, “Without a doubt”, or any other broad sweeping claims because.  Having gone to school as a history major, almost every good and reputable source is not only given an extremely dull title, but they also don’t make broad claims, because broad claims are very weak points.

Linked with this post is a solid article by one of the top female historians on Norse history. I hope you found this as informative as I did, and if you have any articles that prove or refute this point, I would love to have a civil discussion about this in the comments.
